Lights Out Initiatives

The Singapore government can encourage turning off unnecessary lights or drawing blinds within buildings especially during the migratory season for birds between September to March.

A good example that we can model after is Audubon New York’s Lights Out Initiative. In order to reduce sources of light pollution that disorient birds during migration, state-owned as well as managed buildings will switch off non-essential outdoor lighting from 11pm to dawn during the bird migration peak period. Even iconic buildings such as the Rockefeller Center, Time Warner Center and the Chrysler Building have signed on to the initiative.

Likewise, through such initiatives, Singapore can reduce light pollution significantly and minimise the number of deaths of migratory birds.
