What’s Wrong?

The rise of e-commerce has now allowed the convenience of shopping in the comforts of our homes.

Many of us are getting connected to the internet. With a myriad of services at our fingertips, many of us use the web to fulfil our needs and desires. It is no surprise that Singapore’s e-commerce revenue will amount to 4.99 billion by the end of 2019. A study by VISA revealed that 26% of Singaporeans shop online at least once a week. And these numbers are growing.

It is evident that the ability to buy what we want when we want without changing our physical location has brought about greater consumerism. Products are churned out at super fast rates and being shipped across the globe within days. Along this process, carbon emissions and wastage are generated at alarming amounts. Shielded by our screens, we fail to see the environmental impact of our purchases. As the saying goes, ‘out of sight, out of mind’. As a result, we remain ignorant to the problem.

Our purchasing habits are non-sustainable, and we need to get our heads around it.
