Vision and Approach

Defenders of Wildlife, founded in 1947, is a major national conservation organisation that aims to protect biodiversity as well as promote conservation of wildlife and habitat.

The Defenders utilises a straight to the point approach; they come up with creative ideas and solutions to protect species that are at risks throughout North America, and ensures that these solutions have long term effects. Below is their approach:

  • They innovate and come up with creative programs right on the ground where the species lives, with the end goal of protecting as well as restoring key species that are deemed to be near extinct.
  • They also work with the policy-makers on a state, national as well as international level in order to fight for the animals and ensure that their habitats are to be protected. The Defenders is famously known to be the organisation that is efficient and effective in their fight to garner protection for nature and wildlife, and their success have been particularly recognised by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior. Therefore, the organisation is able to easily receive funding as a result so that they can better achieve protection for mother nature.
  • They also work in the courts to come up with laws that serves to protect the environment and prevent any sort of human intervention that seek to destruct mother nature. Basically, they are fighting for North America’s wildlife whom is unable to speak and fight for themselves.

Upon joining the Defenders, Jeff has hosted a documentary series named Feeling the Heat as a gesture of collaboration with the organisation. He also played a crucial and active role in the recovery efforts to save affected wildlife and its habitat as a result of the 2010 oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The video below is an example of what Defenders of Wildlife does:

"Today, I’m a conservationist because I believe that my species doesn’t have the right or option to determine the fate of other species, even ones that inspire fear in us." – Jeff Corwin
