To reduce the reliance on petroleum, the Economic Development Board of Singapore (EDB) has been focusing on research and development, searching for alternative fuels and second generation biofuels.

Biofuel, such as starch, sugar and vegetable oil,  is any fuel of which energy is derived from biological carbon. Second generation biofuels are similar to biofuel, but produced from organic material that is more sustainable. An example of second generation biofuel is biodiesel that is produced without relying on food stock.

With the discovery of biofuels, we can lessen our reliance on petroleum, and this will eventually reduce the incidences of oil spills that will occur during transportation.
