The Singapore freshwater crab forms an important component in ensuring balance in the food web of the inhabited freshwater hill stream ecosystem. It functions both as an omnivorous predator of small animals, as well as, a prey for larger organisms. Therefore, a decline in the population of the Singapore freshwater crab can potentially disrupt the equilibrium in the population of other animals present in the food web. Animals in the habitat which depend on it, directly or indirectly, as sources of food may be forced to move to new habitats or experience a sharp decline in their population. This will disrupt the energy transfer flow in the food web of the inhabited stream ecosystem.
