David Suzuki Foundation

David Suzuki and his second wife, Tara Cullis, co-founded the David Suzuki Foundation on 14th September 1990.

The Foundation was formed after David’s successful radio series It’s a Matter of Survival in 1989, which highlighted the problems faced by the planet. More than 17,000 of his concerned fans wrote him letters asking for ways to solve the global eco-crisis. As a result, David and his wife started the David Suzuki Foundation as a platform to provide solutions for the public to partake in order to save the Earth.

A science-based organization, the David Suzuki Foundation commits itself to presenting solutions based on the best scientific information available. A special emphasis is placed on communication – David and his wife ensures that the scientific material the Foundation publishes are of top-quality and yet easily understood by the common public.

David and Tara wrote the Declaration of Interdependence which became the guiding principles of the Foundation. Parts of this Declaration have also been used to form the Earth Charter in the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

In the early days, the Foundation’s work were largely international. Over time, David and Tara began to focus on Canadian environmental issues, and today, the Foundation is a national, bilingual organization, with their offices running in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal.

As an organization, the David Suzuki Foundation focuses on educating the public through their publications and videos to provide solutions on the following issues:

  • Climate Change
  • Health and the Environment
  • Oceans and Freshwater
  • Wildlife and Habitats
