In Indonesia, anyone caught hunting tigers could face jail time and steep fines (WWF, 2016). In 1999, China signed the CITES treaty, which forbade the sale, purchase, transport, or pharmaceutical use of tiger products as well.

However, a market for tiger parts and their products still remains in Sumatra and the rest of Asia, despite increased government efforts in tiger conservation, including strengthening law enforcement and anti-poaching capacity.
