Sumatran tigers are constantly threatened by the loss of habitat, poaching of both tigers and the prey species, and the illegal trading of tigers parts for traditional medicinal purposes. Accelerated deforestation and rampant poaching means these beautiful cats could face extinction like the Caspian, Javan and Bali subspecies.

These are examples of tragedy of commons. Tragedy of commons is a problem when individuals exploit a common resource to the extent that the demand overwhelm the supply, and the supply cannot regenerate as fast as it depletes. Hence, the resource decline rapidly, and become unavailable to some.

The tragedy of the commons has implications for the use of resources and sustainability.
