Contribution To Politics

Environmental discourse permeates a large part of society and has ties to politics as we observe that governments and intergovernmental bodies such as the United Nations, play a large role in many of the discourses available. This is because these bodies are usually the ones that formalise these discourses and make these discourses more notable and can also create change in the discourses due to their positions of power. Hence, on the flip side, this begs the question of how does environmental discourse contribute to politics?

How does it contribute to politics?

Nature becomes a concept that is highly debatable

Through the different discourses that are available, it provides us with different views of what nature is and where it stands in the hierarchy of concepts. There are some discourses that place nature above humans, while some place nature as something that is below humans, where we are able to govern them. There might also be discourses that put nature as something is completely separate from humans, placing distance between humans and nature itself. This causes nature to become more debatable and hence a more negotiable concept especially in environmental politics. When the concept becomes negotiable, different bodies negotiate what actions would be the best as people may participate in different discourses.

Environmental Discourse Influence on Possible Policies

You will probably hear this statement over and over again as much of environmental discourse is linked back to how we manage the environmental issues. Oftentimes, the way we manage environmental issues is through the use of formal public policy. Hence, this contribution should be no surprise!

But how does it influence? Environmental discourse will cause people to have certain mindsets and feel that some ideologies are ‘permissible’ but others are not in their discourse of choice. Through these restrictions that we get to know from environmental discourse, we are able to predict and also influence the type of policies that will be an outcome from the discourse.
