Overshoot and collapse can be explained using the simple model above. The y-axis of the graph depicts the rate of consumption of resources, while the x-axis depicts time.

At the initial stages where the consumption rate (red line) is lower than the carrying capacity (black line), species living in this ecosystem will prosper (red line increases). This continues till the point where the consumption rate exceeds the carrying capacity. This stage is known as the overshoot. Soon after, the carrying capacity will decrease and the ecosystem will start to dwindle until the consumption rate is lower than the carrying rate. This stage is known as the collapse. 

The increase in deforestation through forest conversion can be attributed to this concept. There is currently a high demand (overshoot), which results in natural forests being converted into specific plantation for resources (depleting of resources). As the demand grows, the resources will continue to deplete until the stage of collapse.
