Partnership with IKEA

In 2019, a partnership between NEA and furniture retail company, IKEA, was formed. Residents of Build-to-Order flats in new HDB precincts such as MacPherson, Bidadari, Sembawang and Sengkang, were provided with a free household recycling bin. About 18’000 households received a voucher by mail which can be used to redeem the recycling bin at IKEA.

The presence of a household recycling bin would serve as a daily prompt to encourage the behaviour of recycling, instead of disposing everything as general waste. The convenience and perceptual affordance of an in-house recycling bin can increase recycling behaviour in one’s home. Furthermore, according to the Theory of Planned Behaviour, those with positive attitude towards recycling merely require reminders to bring out their recycling behaviour.

Behaviour settings theory also states that different environment promotes different behaviours. Theoretically, moving to a new home or environment could promote new behaviours, like recycling. With the free recycling bin provided to new home owners, recycling habits could potentially be introduced.
