Dual Chute System

To enhance the convenience of recycling and solve the issue of poor perceptual affordance of recycling bins, new public housing developments launched since 2014 are fitted with dual chutes for both refuse and recyclables. From 2018, this project was extended to all new non-landed private residential developments with buildings taller than four stories. This strategy proved to be successful as studies found that those living in HDB with dual chutes recycle up to three times more than those living in apartments without them.

This is a possible long-term solution to increasing recycling rates as they serve as visual cues and can initiate the habit of recycling as evident from the increased recycling rates. This may be a possible method to integrate recycling into our social norm.
