Introducing Sustainable Affordances

Affordances represent what is available in the environment around us, which guides how we behave. There are some ways we can change our surroundings to influence more sustainable behaviour:

Firstly, we can increase the number of recycling bins in the area while providing social ‘nudges,’ such as posters reminding people how to recycle (wash the packaging beforehand, look at the labelling, etc.). This is effective for triggering desirable behaviour if it is immediately associated with the target.

Secondly, we can introduce water fountains in public areas to incentivise people to bring their own bottles to refill water instead of buying plastic packaged drinking water bottles.

Example of a mixture of nudging and affordance by Bluewater in the USA. The organisation provided water dispensers for refilling water, while also providing nudging information to remind people to reuse their bottles.
