Highway Beautification Act

One of the most well known conservation efforts associated with Lady Bird Johnson would be the Highway Beautification Act, which was nicknamed the “Lady Bird’s Bill”. The act attempted to beautify and maintain the natural beauty of the highway through the placement of restrictions on the types of advertisement signs permitted along the highway and at certain zones, the maintenance of junkyards along the highways, and the maintenance of the facilities and scenic beauty along the highway. The act was perceived to be a success from the perspective that it marked the first time a First Lady was actively involved in the legislation process. However, the act was watered down throughout the years such that it failed to meet the goals that it was set out to meet.
