A Singapore profile

Singapore has been putting up a tough fight on striking a balance between urbanization and conserving the environment. Singapore has a current land area of 710.30 squared Kilometre (Singapore Department of Statistics, 2009). As of June 2011, Singapore has a population of 5.18 million. Much of the urbanization activities have modified much of the natural landscape in Singapore. As of 2010, Singapore has more than 60% of its land area that is made up of a combination of urban areas and designed landscapes. Here I introduce the concept of Built Environment.

Built environment is a collective term for human-modified places such as workplace, parks, industrial areas and schools. The building of these areas have irreversibly replaced natural habitats to make way for these construction of places. And this has detrimental effects on the biodiversity and Singapore has lost more than 99% of its forest and 50% of its native species. However, looking at the issue from another perspective, the focus for this project would be the environmental impact on the people who are living in Singapore.
