Asian elephants are highly sociable animal, forming cohesive ‘family units’ centered around 5 to 10 related females and led by the ‘matriarch’ – the oldest and largest female of the group.
The young males usually leave the group some time after age 10 (a period in which they become wildly boisterous), where they begin to form small ‘bachelor groups.’ Old males, on the other hand, often become totally solitary.
