Legacy

Aldo Leopold was a pioneer in thinking about ecological communities and ethical considerations. He is also well-known for having founded a new science: wildlife management. He is considered one of the great conservationists of the 20th century, and a great influence on 21st century environmental policies and education. His ideas, his Land Ethic, is still very much relevant today as it was more than 60 years ago.

The below video is a short excerpt from the documentary film Green Fire, a film about Leopold’s life and work. In the excerpt, different conservationists, ecologists, and scholars from different cultures come together and talk about the universal nature of Leopold’s Land Ethic, or as one scholar calls it, the “Life Ethic”.
