Steve worked with local farmers to save Woma Pythons which are on the verge of extinction. He encouraged them not to kill or run these snakes over, but to contact Australia Zoo for the zoo experts to capture and bring the snakes back. In an effort to save the endangered species, Steve provided monetary incentives for farmers to do so.

In addition, Steve often urged the public to engage in considerate tourism. Through his wildlife documentaries and appearances on TV talk shows, Steve constantly dissuaded tourists from purchasing wildlife products such as tortoise and turtle shells, animal skin belts, and shark-fin soup. These products originating from animals are more often than not acquired through illegal poaching and hunting. Steve strongly believed that if everyone could simply change their consumption habits and boycott these animal goods, illegal poaching and hunting would decline. Consequently, wildlife species would be less threatened.
