Earth Hour City Challenge

Cities  have the potential to create conditions for climate smart and sustainable lifestyles, allowing the world’s population to live well within the boundaries of our one and only planet.

With more than 70% of the world’s CO2 emissions generated by cities, the Earth Hour City Challenge has been created to reward pioneering cities that are leading the way towards a fully sustainable future.

An international jury will review all submissions outlining holistic, inspiring and credible city plans that increase the share of renewables in the city’s energy systems. The Earth Hour City is about the commitment towards creating solutions that provide a greener, more eco-friendly environment for individuals.

The most recent winner, 2014- Cape Town demonstrates city strategies to reduce carbon emissions and fight against climate change whilst tackling other development priorities such as food, energy and water security. The city is stepping away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy with its solar water heating program.
