Habitat Fragmentation

Other then directly harming these snow leopards, humans are also threatening the livelihood of these leopards by taking up their habitat range for human use. With increasing populations comes the increasing need for housing and increased consumption.

In order to deal with this, snow leopard habitat range is facing a continuous decline due to the need for land for human settlement and grazing space. This will further increase the rarity of the snow leopard’s natural prey worsening their conflict with humans when livestocks are attacked.

In addition, due to the high financial dependence that many herding communities have on their livestock, many aim to increase their herd size which will lead to overgrazing due to increasing consumption of wild grass. This will reduce the amount of food left for the wild sheep and goats that snow leopards prey on causing a further drop in wild prey available for the snow leopards.
