Severe poverty experienced by many in Kyrgyzstan has prevented humans and snow leopards to live harmoniously together. Since many are nomadic herders who depend on herding for survival, the presence of 150-500 snow leopards living within an area of 105,000 km2 have been seen to be a threat to their livelihood.

The Snow Leopard Trust started their conservation efforts in Kyrgyzstan in 2001 and have now progressed into creating a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). With the help of their Country Program Coordinator, Kubanychbek Jumabay uulu (Kuban), the NGO aims to focus on conservation efforts specifically targeting snow leopards in the country.

Threats to the snow leopards in this region include:

  • Illegal Poaching
  • Retaliatory Killing
  • Mining

Conservation Programs:

  • Conservation Education Programs
  • Annual Eco-camps
  • Research Camera Studies
