The Role of the Zoo

Zoos serve many roles to many different parties, including the role as a site for education to the public, a source of income for the country, and most pertinently, as a site for conservation and the protection of endangered species, in order to sustain biodiversity. With captive breeding and artificial settings that attempt to recreate the animals’ habitats come the inevitable issue of ethics and animal welfare as well. In the following pages, these four aspects will be touched upon in greater detail.
