8. Grand Canyon Campaign

Another one of Sierra Club’s most notable campaign would be the stopping of the Bureau of Reclamation from constructing two dams, which would inevitably lead to the flooding of the Grand Canyon. By 1966, the club started opposing through the plastering of full-page advertisements in the New York Times and Washington Post. They managed to gather a crowd of supporters who protested to the Congress. However, this only resulted in the suspension of the Sierra Club’s activities. The board then became cautious and assembled the Sierra Club Foundation, mainly to get donations and to devote their efforts into the educating the public with non-lobbying activities. Unfortunately, donations to the Club decreased significantly. On the other hand, membership continued to rise drastically.

Sierra Club was once again successful in their efforts and they managed to eradicate the plans for the Grand Canyon dams.
