Background

Samuel was born on 02/02/1992 was raised in Singapore’s western region, Bukit Panjang. He had a brother named Gabriel 3 years his elder. In his younger days, for convenience sake his parents would leave him and his elder brother in the care of his Grandmother living in the once centralised rural region close to various nature reserves (Upper Bukit Timah Road), before going to work.  In his Grandmother’s home, there is no access to electronic gadgets such as computers and at that time Computers were very expensive. As such much of his time was spent observing insects and birds in the various parks and garden near his Grandmothers home. Whenever it rained in the area, puddles of water would form on the uneven grounds near his Grandmother’s house. His favourite hobby used to be catching tadpoles and collecting frog eggs, watching them turn into frogs as the days went by. On the dryer seasons, he and his brother would catch and rear the various grass hoppers that inhabited the gardens. Curious about what they ate he would gather various leaves to see which the grasshopper preferred. When the Grasshoppers grew too large to be kept in a box, he would release them back into the wild.

Monkeys and sometimes even snakes paid a visit to his Grandparent’s home once in a while. With which his grandmother would notify the local zoo keeper to deal with it accordingly. Once a python slid into his backyard and as the local authorities tried to catch it, Samuel watched from the sidelines in excitement.

Now his Grandparents live in a condo, and Samuel growing up left the area for the bustling campus of Nanyang Technological University. He may no longer be as close as he was to nature, but he still has memories of those days, those times of adventure.
