Carbon Dioxide Contribution

Research has been shown that the greater the volume of the wood of the tree is, the more carbon dioxide can be contained in it . It has also been shown that Redwoods capture and store the most amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere in the world compared to other trees due to its size and height. Redwoods are also considered to provide a relatively long term storage due to the fact that they can grow to thousands of years old. This relatively long term storgae of carbon dioxide in the tree is also known as carbon sequestration.

It has been shown that 20% of greenhouse gas emissions is contributed from deforestation. Imagine how much carbon dioxide was contributed to the atmosphere after 96% of old growth Redwoods were recorder to be logged.

With the increase in landslides due to the stripping of redwoods upslope and the building of roads, it removes soil and vegetation and it ends up in the streams. This may contribute to carbon direclty into the drainage network and into the sea .

Also, with the rapid decrease in coastal redwoods population, there are lesser trees to carry out carbon sequestration through photosynthesis and to remove the carbon dioxide in the atmosphre to help offset the greenhouse gas emission from industries and such. Therefore making the problem of global warming and whatever else is tied to it, worse.
