Iconology of the Wayfarer Triptych – Detail
#491
Jester from Ship of Fools
A fool is seated in the rigging at the right. The presence of the fool has inevitably led by many scholars to see a connection between the Louvre panel and Sebastian Brant’s Ship of Fools whose great popularity is demonstrated by the six editions and numerous translations which appeared even during the author’s lifetime. (pp. 28-30)
