Iconology of the Wayfarer Triptych – Detail
#553
Ragged poor man from The Pedlar
Saturn is closely associated with Melancholy, and the Peddler is represented as one of his ‘children’ (the author refers to Pigler’s Florentine woodcuts). She also points out that Saturn is often given a limp, and the peddler seems to be lame ( one foot in a boot, the other rn a shoe, not to mention the staff, sometimes also held by Saturn) [Pigler, 1950, 132; Baldini, ca. 1464; Philip, 1958].
