Landscape background from The Pedlar
Bosch’s background setting mixes a characteristic Dutch dune landscape with cultivation in the form of trees. One wonders whether it could be intended to evoke a wilderness akin to that sought by his saints in retreat [Altdorfer , ca. 1515-1516; Silver, 1983, 34-35] (p. 259)
