BYOB Roadshow 2012

BYOB Roadshow 2012

Date: 14th March 2012
Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm
Venue: NorthLink1 @ N2.1 Lot1, 2 and 3

This is a new effort to reach out to the NTU population to convince them to play a part in the reduction of usage of plastic bags in the campus. We feel that informing students through the print media about the campaign is not necessarily enough; we need to show them why it should be done.

This event will focus on the informing the students how important their contribution can be. We would do that by informing them about the results of the previous BYOB campaigns and how the campaign could be taken forward if the same support is given again. We also would be restating the reasons how the Bring Your Own Bag Campaign can make a change. As we all know, reduction of plastic usage can take place on a much larger scale.

Hence, it is importance for us to do something as the only environmental club in NTU to make a difference in the conservation of the environment. The BYOBD campaign is Earthlink s step in making the change.

Save That Pen @ NTU

Save That Pen @ NTU

Date: 1st 31st December 2011
Venue: Outside LWN Library and LKC Lecture Theatre

Save That Pen @ NTU is about environmental sustainability and aiding the community at the same time. Noting the pen wastage culture pervasive in today?s society, we wish to spread the message of sustainability by calling for people to give us their unwanted and refillable pen-bodies. This is a joint venture with NUS. Both Earthlink NTU and NUS would be collaborating and working together towards the success of the Save That Pen . This has been implemented in NUS for 2 years now, and Earthlink wants to bring it to NTU.

Objectives

– To create an avenue for NTU students to donate used pens to non-profit organisations that is involved in educational projects for students in need.
– To encourage the reuse of pens by putting into place a long-term, sustainable system that promotes the use of pen-refills instead of consuming new pens.
– To translate the sustainable message into the daily lives of both NTU students and recipients of the donated pens.

Movie Screening: WALL-E

Movie Screening: WALL-E

Date: 19th January 2012
Time: 6:30pm 10:30pm
Venue: TR-7, Nanyang Technological University

Earthlink gatherings have always served to bring people together, forming a platform for people to interact with each other and discuss environmental issues that are close to their heart. At the same time, the gathering is also an opportunity for the learning and broadening of ideas and views regarding environmental issues.

For this gathering, we have screened Wall” E , a 2008 American computer-animated science fiction film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and directed by Andrew Stanton. The story follows a robot named WALL” E, who is designed to clean up a waste-covered Earth far in the future. He falls in love with another robot named EVE, and follows her into outer space on an adventure that changes the destiny of both his kind and humanity. WALL” E has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews among critics, scoring an approval rating of 96% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It grossed $521.3 million worldwide, won the 2008 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the 2009 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form, the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature as well as being nominated for five other Academy Awards at the 81st Academy Awards. WALL” E ranks first in TIME’s “Best Movies of the Decade”.

The aim of this weekly gathering is to educate the members about the effect of post consumerism. The lesson taught is that we, as a society, must become less wasteful. Our habit of tossing aside old things in preference for new and more exciting things is already causing our garbage rates to rise dramatically. At this rate, there will be more garbage than our dumps and landfills can handle and, eventually, if this keeps up, we will end up destroying Earth just like the humans in this film. Recycling and re-using items to their fullest are the lessons WALL” E teaches through his collecting. Nothing is wasted in WALL” E home.

Learning Trail at MacRitchie Reservoir

Learning Trail at MacRitchie Reservoir

Date: 25th February 2012
Time: 8:00am 1:30pm
Venue: MacRitchie Reservoir

Unique to Singapore, the nation has established two separate systems to collect used water and rainwater.

Rainwater is collected through rivers, streams, canals and drains and stored in 17 reservoirs, which MacRitchie Reservoir is one of them. Various reservoirs are linked by pipelines so that excess water can be pumped from one reservoir to another, thus optimising capacity.

This aim of this event is for participants to gain more in depth knowledge pertaining to the Singapore Water Story through MacRitchie Reservoir, Singapore s first reservoir. The event also provides an opportunity for members to appreciate some of the challenges and constraints faced by Singapore where she has succeeded.

MacRitchie Reservoir was selected out of the 17 reservoirs in Singapore due to several reasons. As the oldest reservoir in Singapore, apart from the Singapore Water Story, MacRitchie s provides a rich history and heritage which dates back to the 1800s.

It is one of the four reservoirs that bound the nature reserves besides Lower Peirce Reservoir, Upper Peirce Reservoir and Upper Seletar Reservoir.

In addition, the reservoir now boasts a green two-storey car park and I believe that it will be an insight to many who has not seen one.

E-Waste Campaign 2012

E-Waste Campaign 2012

Date: 16th February 2012
Time: 7:30am to 3:00pm
Venue: St. Joseph s Institution, Malcolm Road

This year, the initiative was taken to kick-start awareness about electronic waste accumulation in Singapore. To do so, it has targeted the secondary schools in Singapore because the best way to spread awareness is to start at the grass roots.

It is believed such an initiative was important since the amount of E-wastes in Singapore is rapidly increasing but not many initiatives are being taken towards their recycling. Also, among all urban wastes, E-wastes are the most toxic form of wastes. Also, we truly believe that E-waste is not waste considering the amount of precious minerals like gold, platinum, etc. that can be extracted from them.

Objectives

” To publicize among students the need to safely dispose and recycle e-wastes.
” To install an electronic waste bin at the school premises to regularly collect e-wastes.
” To form a strong tie-up with the school s green club to ensure sustenance of the objective.

Earth Hour is a global event and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. CDC Singapore has been organizing this event over the years and has been successful in their undertakings. In 2009, they arranged Earth Hour all over Singapore with participants from schools all over pooling in support and helping in achieving their goal.
This year Earthlink NTU has been invited by CDC to volunteer and show our support for their cause. This year Earth Hour will be held on 31st March and we will be sending volunteers from Earthlink, joined by volunteers from Singapore Polytechnic Environmental club, to Jurong West HDB flats. Volunteers from other JCs and polys will be sent to HDB flats all over and the aim is to cater to 100,000 households with our combined effort.
Volunteers will go door to door asking the people to sign a pledge the volunteers will present to them, which will require them to switch off their main lights for one hour during the Earth Hour. So, the main aim of this event is to actually make a difference by saving energy and also educate people about the importance to conserve energy. These pledges will be collected at the end of the day and there will be a final counting of the total number of pledges collected through a combined effort of students all over Singapore and if the required 100,000 pledges are met, the goal will be completed.
