World Water Day has been celebrated by many countries around the world for more than 17 years now. The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative driven by the UN Water Group. Here in Singapore, PUB as the National Water Agency, has been organising World Water Day celebrations annually and this year, PUB will be expanding it to a nation-wide celebration across fifteen reservoirs and waterways.
As part of this year celebrations, a series of fun and exciting activities will be taking place at Marina Barrage on 24 March 2012, which is the anchor site. The WWD Celebrations will also be concurrently celebrated at 15 other locations this year and they are Kallang River at Ang Mo Kio Bishan Park, Lorong Halus, Punggol Waterway, Yishun Pond, Kranji Marshlands, Marina Barrage, Alexandra Canal, Jurong Lake, Sengkang Floating Wetland, Lower Seletar Reservoir, Bedok Reservoir, MacRitchie Reservoir, Kolam Ayer Waterfront and Pandan Reservoir.
The highlight of the event is a hands-on educational water treatment exercise, specially catered for the school children. It is hoped that this activity will also allow the school children to reflect about the significance of the water bodies within their vicinity, raise the awareness of the lake and water as a precious resource, especially in Singapore.
The Guest of Honour for this event is the Deputy Prime Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
