Kembara Namra was an overseas community project by NTU/NIE Malay Language and Cultural Society. Even though it was held over the fasting month of Ramadhan, participants pressed on and went to the rural areas of Nagarkot, Nepal from 29 May to 12 June 2017, to educate students of Shree Chuna Devi Secondary School. The project also involved providing structural improvements – refurbishments of windows and doors, and construction of a brick wall to prevent gravel and sand from falling off a nearby hill.

Grades 5, 6 and 7 were the main focus of the education plan. The education aspects covered English, Science and Arts. Students were taught the concepts of 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) during English lessons, which will help in improving their waste management. The students also had fun conducting science experiments during Science lessons, and doing craft work (fold origami and make friendship bands) during Art lessons.

Kembara Namra was an exceedingly fulfilling and awakening experience for all participants, having done both construction and education in a day with limited basic necessities such as water supply and electricity.

This trip has taught me to step back and appreciate what we have. Sometimes we are too caught up in chasing after our goals that we forget to stop and be grateful for what we already have. In addition, doing this project during the month of Ramadhan was truly a blessing.Syahirah Afifah, Publicity Officer
