Last December 2018, the WKWSCI Volunteer Programme, short for WeeVolunteer, kicked off the holidays with an exciting Scavenger Hunt for residents at Jamiyah Children’s Home (JCH). Held at East Coast Park, 19 volunteers and 18 children beneficiaries came together to have a fun-filled day in the sun.

What’s a beach day without building sandcastles?

The first highlight of the day was a Sandcastle Building Competition. The children and volunteers split into different groups, pitting their best sandcastle creations against one another as they tried to impress the judge, a student programmer from WeeVolunteer. Unsurprisingly, the judge was blown away – it was definitely not an easy task to crown a winner!

After the friendly competition, it was time for the main event – the Scavenger Hunt. Within their groups, the volunteer and children travelled around East Coast Park to complete various station games and challenges. One of the stations was a treasure hunt station where the groups scoured every inch of the park, including inside a barbecue pit, to locate some hidden items. Another station tested the children’s coordination and mental agility as they had to correctly answer mathematics problems while displaying a different number with their fingers. From mind-boggling math games to team games like Captain’s Ball, the diverse line-up of games made for an entertaining day at the beach.

Both volunteers and children had a blast exploring the park and taking a breather after a hectic school semester. This first outing with JCH helped volunteers learn how to engage and forge friendships with the children, giving them renewed confidence for future sessions at JCH.

“It was heart-warming to see the beneficiaries enjoying themselves and how something so small and simple can make their day. It was only possible because of our volunteers, who braved the heat to make the day out a fun one for the beneficiaries.” Acacia Wu, Local Programmer
