“If I change, the world changes” – the motto of EarthLink NTU, a non-profit youth organisation with the aim of spreading sustainability. To achieve their goal of environmental advocacy, the club carries out various initiatives engaging club members and the community, with the most recent being Green Workshop For Students, where 32 volunteers shared tips on environmentalism with Corporation Primary School’s Environment Club.

This workshop covered the three pillars of EarthLink NTU – Nature, conserving the Earth’s ecosystem and ecological balance; Resources, promoting responsible consumption of what the planet provides; and Technology, encouraging innovation to extract the best use of our limited supply.

With members representing each of the club’s three goals, student volunteers prepared engaging lessons to share their knowledge with the primary school children. These included games and arts & crafts sessions, where volunteers had the opportunity to interact with the younger students. One activity had the students create their own items out of recyclable materials such as yakult bottles and aluminum cans, while another featured information on nature and biodiversity through a flashcard game.

Alongside educating the students, the event also served as a platform for EarthLink NTU members to serve the community through information and education – the tasks were specially planned out to ensure that they were fun and engaging for the primary school students while sharing green tips that the students can follow.

Overall, the workshop was well-received by the students and volunteers. The younger students came away with valuable insights on the importance of sustainability, while EarthLink NTU members were able to guide more individuals in caring for their surroundings – after all, as the club’s motto pledges, if people change, so too will the world, and for the better.

As part of EarthLink NTU’s Community Engagement Committee, we organised this event with the aim of inculcating environmentalism into primary school students. The upcycling activities definitely unlocked these kids’ creative sides as they came up with very different and interesting end-products with the materials given. It was even more heartening when one of the kids told me that he’d continue do this with his unwanted materials at home. Rupa Shree Sekar, Community Engagement Committee member
