Project 10ve is an Overseas Community Engagement Project spearheaded by residents of Hall of Residence 10. The project consisted of 25 members, and it took place from 1 – 13 June 2024 in San Pablo City, Philippines, a vibrant city in the province of Laguna, renowned for its seven picturesque crater lakes and natural beauty. San Pablo also boasts a rich cultural heritage and a strong emphasis on sustainability and community development.
The objective of the OCEP trip was twofold: (1) to construct a basketball court for YMCA San Pablo and (2) to gain a deeper understanding of life in the local community. We also aimed to educate young children about environmental basics and share insights about Singapore.
The project kicked off as the team rolled up their sleeves and began construction on the basketball court. This wasn’t just about creating a space for sports; it was about building a hub for community interaction and bonding. Basketball is a beloved pastime in the Philippines, and this court would serve as a gathering point for families and friends, promoting unity and active lifestyles. Building this basketball court also provides aspiring athletes with a place to train, potentially impressing scouts and earning scholarships for their education.
In today’s rapidly changing world, understanding the environment and our impact on it is more crucial than ever. Our teaching program aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness in young children, teaching them about key concepts such as conservation, recycling, and the importance of biodiversity. Through interactive activities, games, and storytelling, children learned how their actions, both big and small, can contribute to a healthier planet. This hands-on approach made learning fun and engaging, ensuring that the core messages of environmental stewardship resonated with the young participants.
Children learned about Singapore’s “Garden City” initiative, which emphasises the integration of nature into urban living. Activities included discussions about vertical gardens, urban farming, and how Singapore’s commitment to sustainability can serve as a model for other cities around the world. This connection not only sparked imagination but also encouraged children to think critically about their own environment and how they can contribute to local sustainability efforts.
In order to gain a deeper understanding of the local community and a unique glimpse of daily life in San Pablo, we stayed for a day in the homes of local families where we all share meals rich in local flavours, and engage in lively conversations with our host families. That night, many of us experienced the warmth and hospitality that Filipino culture is known for.
Additionally, we also visited a local University where it offers a fascinating look into the educational landscape in Philippines. We toured the campus, attended a workshop led by local students, and engaged in discussions about education and community development. This visit was not just an academic experience; it was an opportunity to share ideas and perspectives, enriching both the visitors and their hosts. The exchange of knowledge underscored the importance of collaboration in fostering educational growth and community empowerment.
This OCEP exemplifies how community-driven initiatives can create lasting impacts. Through service-learning activities such as building a basketball court, engaging with local families, and immersing ourselves in the educational environment, we have not only contributed to the community’s physical landscape but also enriched lives through cultural exchange and personal connections. The basketball court stands as a testament to the unity forged during this journey, inviting laughter, competition, and community spirit for years to come.
This experience has not only enriched my understanding of different cultures but has also strengthened my resolve to make a positive impact wherever I can. Siti Nur Atiqah, Leader
