This was the seventh year that NTU Rotaract Club visited Yangon’s Witharkar Nunnery. The team planned the project for 2 semesters and held fundraisers before embarking on the trip.
With two main project objectives in mind, the team set out to set-up a simple library as well conduct basic English lessons, in the hope that helping to improve language skills will be able to help open the door for opportunities in the future. Shelves were bought and the team transformed a room into a library. Aside from donated books brought from Singapore, a few boxes of books, consisting of Burmese as well as English books, were collected in Myanmar as well. To ensure that the kids would want to come visit the library, the team tried to create an inviting environment with vibrant colours as well as an animal wall mural.
The other trip objective was to share with the children knowledge and facts (cultures, geography, general knowledge, diversity, first aid and emergency preparedness) that they may not have access to without exposure to the outside world. To keep the kids interested in learning, the team used interactive methods for the lessons. It was clear that the kids, especially those from the lower grades, really enjoyed the programmes.
