Richard O’Barry founded The Dolphin Project on the date of the first Earth day 22nd April 1970, when he resolved to end the exploitation and captivity of all dolphins. The goal of the Dolphin project is to educate the public on issues of captivity, rehabilitate captive dolphins for release into the wild (where feasible),  and to stop the captivity and slaughter of dolphins all around the world. It is the longest running and leading organization that centers on dolphin protection.
