Coconut Tales (椰爷故事)

Coconut Tales  uses the art of storytelling to retain memories of the past and strengthen the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. Reminiscence therapy is used to engage seniors and helping them cope with dementia, and guide the story collection process.

Coconut tales bring forth the perspective of personal lives, connecting family members to engage in reminiscence within a series of environment scenes. Project records stories and moments of a Singaporean’s life of the 1950s to the 1970s, contributing to saving Singapore’s intangible heritage.

With the exploration of art, storytelling and heritage, the outcome of this project is an installation of miniature dioramas and a publication that encourages personal perspectives and stories of seniors to be shared. The imperative is to document, maintain and engage Singaporeans of different generations in Singapore’s heritage and to build new creative conversations between the old and the younger generations.

wandering

Young May Yee’s life gets a 360° makeover when she is given a chance to go to the sunny Singapore for a much brighter future. But with an opportunity this grand, can she really keep up with what she is expected to become?

‘wandering’ is a semi-autobiographical graphic novel that follows May Yee, a young Burmese TCK coming to terms with her identity and the relationships with people around her, shaped by her experiences of living in Myanmar in the early 2000s and then moving to Singapore with her family. The story will be told through different perspectives, from both May Yee and her immigrant family in different print formats and sizes, and each of these works will be inspired in terms of form and narrative content by items from Burmese visual culture. Through these visual and narrative elements, ‘wandering’ hopes to communicate a more personal and unique experience of moving from Myanmar, while addressing the universal TCK experiences of growing up in two countries at the same time.

A Cup of Coffee

Mathematics is all around us, in everything we do. It is so entwined with today’s way of life that we cannot fully comprehend and navigate the information surrounding us without it. Even something as simple as crafting a cup of perfectly balanced coffee requires a basic understanding of arithmetic mathematics and quantification.

A Cup of Coffee is a brand concept that utilizes basic mathematical operations as a form of design aesthetics within a brand identity. This project aims to provide a new perspective by using equations, formulas and bar graphs/bar models to visualize information and create a visual language. It attempts to influence how consumers comprehend information and provide an alternative visual method to learn more about coffee as they enjoy it.

Full Circle

Full Circle is an animated short film that presents the Moon and Earth’s relationship through a narrative medium. It journeys through a sleepless night, conquering the semi-conscious moonlit world and the retrospective nature of the night.

The personal stories of twenty experts and enthusiasts in astronomical fields construct the narrative and its landscapes — coffee tables, paper planes, corridors, among other things. This anecdotal format seeks to present science through the eyes of humanity, prompting the audience to experience scientific information through the familiar mundanity of life.

The humanistic vision of science acts as a launchpad for curiosity and allows the audience to access science through their own experiential libraries.

Adulting Follies

In the journey of education, every student is presented with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge through an overseas exchange program. Besides circularly, the program provides networking and cultural insights not found locally.

Though it is all fun and games in the picture, the journey is fueled with challenges and uncertainties as far as life-changing experiences go. Built on individual adaptation, one must overcome the difficulties and adjust to cultural differences. Past that, the perception of the World changes significantly as you rediscover knowledge and the personal direction in life.

This project aims to produce an editorial publication that would inspire students who are planning to go on an exchange programme. “Adulting Follies” is a soul searching and stress-inducing piece that features personal documentation of an individual’s self-reflection of the exchange program to Canada. It seeks to help students have a deeper understanding and an easier way to concoct their unique exchange program experience.
