Nammi’s Mommy

Nammi’s Mommy is a series of pop-up picture books that seek to provide support towards caregivers in discussing concepts surrounding incarceration with young children of incarcerated parents, in a simplified and developmentally-suitable manner. The books explain the rehabilitation process to the children, and can also be used as an aid for caregivers to navigate these conversations with them. Through interactive visuals, Nammi’s Mommy hopes to better the children’s understanding and awareness level.

It also aims to shed a more positive light towards concepts surrounding incarceration as an attempt to challenge existing stigma and stereotypes attached. This project hopes to ease experiences of families caring for young children facing parental incarceration today and in the future.

Let Feelings Flow

Understanding emotions is challenging for children, this confusion often manifests in children’s tantrum. This inability to control their emotion increases the likelihood of behavioural and psychological issues in the future.

Mindfulness-based-intervention has shown effectiveness in managing negative emotion. Let Feelings Flow is created with the intention of assisting children and parents to explore emotional regulation through mindfulness, to curb the development of issues stemming from poor emotional regulation.

Due to limited findings on the effect of mindfulness on preschoolers and lack of emotional regulation education, this project focuses on how design intervention can be used to deliver mindfulness to facilitate emotional regulation among preschoolers.

The final product is a 3-book series which can also be stand-alone books; hoping to share emotions regulation strategies and mindfulness practices with parents and preschoolers to be incorporated into their daily routine, promoting emotional intelligence and eventually emotional control to improve overall well-being.

Peeking into the World of Shyness

In a tell-all society where outgoing individuals appear to be socially preferred, shy individuals are expected to build up their confidence and to ‘get out of their shell’. However, the difficulties that they face is more than just being tongue-tied but a series continuous struggle of of self-evaluation, self-criticism and self-consciousness. The lack of empathy for shy individuals often results in the misunderstanding and lack of emotional support for them, leaving to fend for themselves in a world where outgoing characteristics are socially preferred. It does not help that shy individuals experience constant self-doubt and back away from what they fear.

Through the use of storytelling and illustrations, this project allows the viewer to take a peek into the world of a shy individual through her struggles as well as her ability to handle shyness in a series 3 illustrated books.
