What is a LEO report? Our Language Experiences Overview report or LEO hopes to give you a new way to look at your child’s language environment! By creating a fun visualization of the different languages that you and other caregiver(s) know and use, we hope that this will encourage you to use more of your languages around your child.
What’s in a LEO report? In our study, we asked you about the language(s) that you use around your child, as well as the language(s) of other people who are often around your child. You also indicated how much everyone interacts with your child, and from there, we calculated what language(s) the child often hears according to who spends the most time with them. We also asked you to rate how good you think you (and other caregivers) are in the language(s) you use, and to guess how fluent everyone is in the languages that they use whether it’s for reading, writing, speaking, or understanding. The higher the fluency level, the further the line is from the middle point of the cross, and the bigger the shapes. These different bits of information were combined to form a Consolidated Language Input Profile (CLIP) for your child and all of his or her reported caregivers!
How do I read my child’s LEO report?
What can I do with the LEO report? If you want to make some changes to what you’re looking at, you may want to think about the people your child spends time with and how you can boost that exposure! You might want to use this report in your family language planning or bring this report along for consultations with your child’s educational providers (like school teachers) or medical practitioners (like your child’s pediatrician) for context about your child’s language development.
