This is the LENA recorder device. It acts like a ‘speech pedometer’, recording the speech that your child hears. This recording will help us understand the language environments of children growing up in Singapore, including what the mix of languages is like and the amount of language they hear from different people they interact with.
In the following, you will see the steps on how to use the recorder and the common FAQ regarding this device.

Step 1: Taking the LENA recorder out of the bag

- The LENA recorder has been sanitized.
- This device is proven to be safe for babies to use.
- Do not put the recorder near an open flame.
- If the device gets dirtied, do not use wet cloth or moist wet wipes to clean the device.
- Do not put the recorder under running water or into water.
- Use a dry cloth or tissue to clean the surface of the device.
- You can use the provided alcohol swabs to wipe the device.
- At the end of the study, we will clean the device after you return the LENA back to us
Step 2: Starting a LENA recording

- You will receive two recording T-shirts.
- Press and hold ‘Power’ for three seconds. The display will turn on.
- Press and hold ‘Record’ until recording starts. You will see a timer come on the screen.
- Place recorder in shirt pocket.
- Fasten the buttons on the shirt pocket.
- The recorder can record up to 16 hours and does not need to be turned off.
Step 3: End of recording day

- Take the LENA recorder out of the recording shirt pocket at the end of the day.
- When it’s time to go to bed, you can place it near your child to record interactions during the bedtime routine.
- The recorder can record up to 16 hours and does not need to be turned off.
- If you would like to turn it off, Press and Hold the ‘Power’ button.
- At the end of the recording session, place the recorder back in the bag and return the recorder to our researcher the next day.
- Do not attempt to connect the LENA recorder to any other device. Doing so will spoil the recorder.
- If the recorder is out of battery or switched off on its own, don’t worry about it – we will recover the recording in the lab the next day.

What happens if my child needs to change clothing or take a shower during the recording?

- Remove the LENA recorder from the T-shirt pocket.
- Do not pause the recording or turn off the recorder.
- If your child is taking a shower, you may keep the recorder nearby but make sure it’s in a safe place and will not fall into the bath water.
- Put on a clean recording T-shirt.
- Check that the recording is still running and place the recorder in the pocket.
- Fasten the buttons on the shirt pocket.
What happens if we are going out and my child needs to be carried in a sling or carrier?

- Remove the LENA recorder from the recording T-shirt on your child before carrying your child in a sling or carrier.
- Do not have the recorder in the recording t-shirt pocket while your child is being carried in the carrier.
- You can place the recorder in your pocket as you are moving about.
- Once your child is out of the carrier, check that the recording is still running and place the recorder back in the recording t-shirt
- Fasten the buttons on the shirt pocket.
What happens if we are going out and my child needs to be strapped in a car seat?

- Remove the LENA recorder from the recording T-shirt on your child before placing your child in the car seat.
- Do not have the recorder in the t-shirt pocket while your child is in the car seat.
- During the car ride, place the recorder near your child.
- For example, on the seat next to your child.
- Place the recorder back in the recording t-shirt once your child is out of the car seat.
