The Insider Series: UX & Digital Transformation by Smartcademy, 7 October 2021

The demand for UX professionals is increasing and many students are curious to know what UX is and how they can explore a career in this field. Hou Teng, our very own ADM Alumni started his career in graphic design before moving into the digital space and UX. In the webinar, he shared his personal journey, what is the difference between UI and UX, skills and tools to succeed and tips on how to start out in this field with no experience. The session was insightful as he shared about the roles available in the industry, tools like Figma and Whimsical and the double diamond process.

With the use of the in-vision board, Hou Teng guided the students through interactive activities that allowed them to get a better understanding of what UX is. By focusing on empathy, understanding the users’ needs / wants / habits and coming out with a solution that addresses those needs.

Here are some Insider tips:

  1. UX is not only focused on the design, but a great user experience
  2. Soft skills like creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving are important but cross functional collaboration between teams are equally important as well
  3. Tap on your background of studies together with your interest in UX, to venture into an area which you can contribute to E.g Accountancy student going into UX Design in one of the Big 4s

Student Testimonial

From the Trainer’s personal experience sharing, I learnt more about what a UX Designer does. I really enjoyed participating in the fun activities during the session which made the webinar interesting and practical. We learnt about different designs, wireframing and prototyping tools that I can try out in the future. Following the steps given by the trainer, I learnt how to use Whimsical and copy a wireframe from existing designs. I benefitted from gaining more knowledge about UX and how to create designs independently using various applications or software. I also got to know how I can kickstart a UX related career by embarking on further self-learning. I am going to apply the skills I have gained into practice as I am now preparing for a competition related to UI/UX and illustration.
