Team Questions Session 3

1. Understanding Earth’s energy balance is essential to understanding the issue of global warming. For example, the solar energy striking Earth’s surface averages 168 watts per square meter (W/m^2), but the energy leaving Earth’s surface averages 390 W/m^2. Why isn’t Earth cooling Rapidly?

The presence of greenhouse gases traps the energy emitted from the earth surface as Infrared energy, thereby trapping the heat in Earth, preventing effective cooling of Earth.

2. Do you think the statement made by the cartoon is justified? Explain.

No. It is not Justified.

Global warming is the trapping of heat from the sun to Earth due to the increased presence of greenhouse particles such as carbon dioxide.

During winter, the amount of light rays received is actually lower, resulting in the less pronounced effects of global warming.

3. One of the first radar devices developed during World War II used microwave radiation of specific wave range that triggers the rotation of water molecules. Why was the design not successful?

It was necessary to shield the radar to protect people around it from harmful microwaves that could interact with the water in their bodies.

4. Now that you have studied air quality (Unit 1), stratospheric ozone depletion (Unit 2), and global warming (Unit 3), which do you believe poses the most serious problem for you in the short run? In the long run?

Short Term:

Either Air Quality ( As it would pose immediate treat to the health of humans, causes respiratory problems, skin problems, haze.)

Ozone depletion (Results in more harmful rays reaching the surface of the earth, causes skin problems ( such as skin cancer) )

Long Term:

Global Warming (Increases average temperate of earth, interferes with the natural functions of living things and plants(can elaborate but lazy)

Ozone Depletion (Presence of harmful rays causes genetic mutations in plants… etc? )
