One carbon atom can differ from another in the number of neutrons and electrons. All carbon atoms differ from all uranium atoms in the number of protons, neutrons and electrons.

N-14 and N-15 are isotopes which have the same number of protons but differ in their numbers of neutrons. Hence, they have different mass numbers. On the other hand, symbol N is simply a representation of the element nitrogen which is a mixture of all isotopes.
