“Mynah” evolved from the Hindi word mainā, which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit madanā, meaning “joyful” and “mad.” The bird is common enough, and often considered a pest, but its bright boisterous presence is part of the garden campus life at NTU, and unmistakable too in the chrome and glass cathedrals of the CBD and the HDB heartlands. Its song celebrates the everyday, and makes us pay attention to the world around us, and that is what the Creative Writing students of NTU aim to do here. To observe, to write, to sing the world into being, and make the everyday new over and over.
