Job Creation

The continual development of new green spaces and maintenance of existing ones promote job creation as a huge deal of work goes behind the scenes in managing the green spaces found all around us. As we work towards fulfilling NParks’ vision of Singapore being a biophilic City in a Garden, a greater amount of manpower would be required in the horticulture and landscaping industry to manage and upkeep green spaces dotted around the country.

However, it is crucial to note that the management of green spaces go beyond work done by low-cost laborers. Released in 2009, the Sustainable Development Blueprint outlined initiatives to improve Singapore’s urban environment over the next 10-20 years. Of the new schemes proposed, one of them included a new enforcement that requires one-third of new commercial and half of residential buildings to incorporate skyrise greenery, regardless of the form it may take. The integration of skyrise greenery into urban planning capitalizes on knowledge from a plethora of disciplines, ranging from (but not limited to) architecture, life sciences and the social sciences. As such, it goes without saying that the move to green the city aids in job creation and provision for individuals from all walks of life.
