Costal development

The human population growth is increasing rapidly. A lot of people love to live near the coast and most people experience the ocean as something attractive. We want to spend time near the coast for recreation, work abilities and for health benefits. These are a couple of reasons why the number of people living near the coast grows exponentially. Places where people live go together with the formation of settlements, infrastructure and industry. You may think the Coral reefs are living deep into the ocean, untouchable and reachless by the human habitats. However, the impact of the coastal development is huge. You can think of directly physical damage by creating new land and therefore filling the ocean or the extension of the coastline. The indirect consequences are because of pollution, sewage, sediment and toxic chemicals. So, the human population growth and the development of settlements have a enormous negative effect on the reef ecosystems.
