Where can I charge my alt-car?

One of the biggest considerations in making the change to a hybrid car or an electric car is where you can “refuel” it. Unfortunately, Singapore’s electric vehicle (EV) charging points are not as abundant as petrol stations.

Below is an interactive map of the few charging points located in Singapore. The list of locations is not exhaustible as the locations are not always readily available online. In addition, this map only features the publicly accessible locations. Some companies have gone the extra mile to install their services in private estates. How convenient!

The use of these charging stations is easy peasy. Most of them simply require that you download their application from the Apple Store or Google Play. From there, all you need to do is link your credit/debit card for easy payment. After that, you’re good to go! The applications usually allow you to browse the full range of charging locations they have around the island, and they will tell you which one is nearest to your current location. In fact, many manufacturers have installed applications into their cars that enable the drivers to easily find a nearby charging point.

Some useful mobile applications and websites are:

  1. GreenLots Mobile (http://chargenow.greenlots.com)
  2. PlugShare (https://www.plugshare.com)
  3. Bosch (https://www.boschevsolutions.com/service-and-support/find-charging-station)

Taking into consideration that there are so few electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars in Singapore, the number of charging points in Singapore is in fact representative.

However, if we really want to persuade Singaporeans to make the switch from traditional to alt, it is important to make charging points accessible. Why you may ask? If we were to increase the number of charging points and spread them out equally throughout Singapore, people will then not find it troublesome to find a charging point to re-charge their car. One of the external barriers to them purchasing an alt-car will be removed. This external barrier is affordances, a.k.a. the perceived utility of the physical environment or what is allowed by our physical environment. And if they require to charge it overnight, they can find one that is nearby their house. As a result, Singaporeans will find ease in driving an alt-car on a regular basis.
