Meet Josua Muakula.

At 18 years old, he became the youngest turtle monitor in Fiji. The interesting thing was, he used to hunt and consume turtle meat. It was a tradition in his culture to do so – and he followed this practice until he participated in a WWF Turtle Monitor Training in a nearby village. He adopted a biocentric perspective, where he saw the value in ensuring sea turtles continue to exist. The WWF Training was able to develop his environmental identity such that it made him change his lifestyle habits and play his part in protecting the remaining population. It shows that after gaining knowledge of the problem, he saw how he could play a part. He not only understood the challenge but assumed responsibility in this issue, which led him to take action.

“I know that if we don’t do something about it, future generations will never get to see a turtle”
