In order to provide a high quality living environment for the projected 6.9 million population, the government has proposed plans to invest in development of infrastructure and facilities. The government aims to create high quality urban spaces that offer its people convenient access to amenities and transport services.

Some of the proposed plans as written in the Population White Paper are:

  • Enhance public transportation
    – Improve rail connectivity and capacity by 2030 (refer to figure 2)
    – Build more integrated transport hubs over the next 10 years
    – Add 800 new public buses over the next 5 years

  • Increase supply of housing
    – 110,000 public housing units and 90,000 private housing units will be completed by 2016
  • Build more hospitals and care facilities by 2016 to prepare for ageing population
    – 17 new and replacement nursing homes
    – 39 senior care centres
    – 56 seniors’ activity centres
  • Improve amenities
    – Have more sheltered walkways
    – Build more underground pedestrian networks
    – Develop more cycling paths and bicycle parking facilities[1]
  • Explore new technology and innovative solutions to expand and optimize land use
    – National Research Foundation has allocated S$135 million for research and development into land and liveability, focusing on creating new spaces and optimizing the use of space
