Forest Fires

Fires can be natural and beneficial to the forest landscapes, however they can also be very problematic when they occur at the wrong place and wrong time. Every year there are millions of acres of forests around the world that are deforested due to fires caused by human intervention.

In Southeast Asia, these corporations and local farmers (particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia) use fires to clear land for urbanization and agricultural reasons. Such forest fires affect not only the overall composition of forests, but affect the biodiversity of plants and animals who take shelter in the forests. Fires also alter water cycles and soil fertility.
